Antique technology, or how did it work?

Antique technology, or how did it work?

Aristocratic residences do not only boast hunting collections, souvenirs from travels, or works of art. They often surprise with high-tech conveniences of the time.

Jánský Vrch Chateau boasts a unique technical marvel, still in operation and unparalleled in Czechia, and you will also see how the servants lived in the chateau.

At Šternberk Castle, you will be fascinated by the Liechtenstein kitchen and the lift. Konice Chateau houses the Museum of Local Handicrafts, and Dřevohostice Chateau displays a collection of scales and measuring instruments and a collection of fire trucks and equipment.

Where Did the Servants Live? How Was the Chateau Lit?

Jánský vrch Chateau

You may notice a peculiarity at Jánský Vrch Chateau. Before introducing electricity, the chateau and its courtyard were illuminated by gas lamps. Several chateau chambers therefore have chandeliers with chains to turn gas on and off. Gas lamps in the main courtyard are fully functional even today – as one of the few places in the Czech Republic.

The chateau offers several guided tours. The first one shows the ceremonial rooms and private rooms of the gentry. Another tour leads through the service quarters of the chateau – you will see the rooms of a servant and cook, the kitchen, laundry and mangle room, and the administrator’s flat. You can also visit the attic and a themed exhibit in the guest rooms.

Konice Chateau

The Museum of Local Handicrafts presents various trades with long traditions, such as grain milling, manufacture of scales, blacksmithing, brewing, and dressmaking. A number of rare exhibits are on display at the museum, for instance the oldest preserved tower clockwork in the region and firearms from the Napoleonic Wars.

The museum also boasts the largest collection of axes in the Czech Republic, recorded in the Czech Book of Records. All existing types of axes are on display. The collection includes the largest axe and lumberjack saw in the country.

Šternberk Castle

In addition to tours that present ceremonial rooms and aristocratic life, one of the guided tours also presents the technical facilities of the castle. You will see the dumbwaiter and the personal lift, visit areas intended for servants, and climb to the attic with the lifts machine room. You will also visit one of the most important rooms of every castle and chateau – the kitchen. The Liechtenstein kitchen at Šternberk Castle was completely renovated recently and you can admire its gorgeous tile stove and other facilities. The local technical peculiarities also include the icehouse in the park.

Dřevohostice Chateau

The chateau offers not only typical chateau exhibits, but the remaining halls and even the attic include many other items of interest. The tour therefore includes an exhibit of firefighters’ helmets and scales of various ages and uses. Truly unique in our country is the exhibit of folk medicine, psychotronics, and bioecology, with numerous unusual artefacts like the kiss-o-meter and an apparatus for the production of water of life and death. The front buildings house the Fire Brigade Museum with a horse-drawn fire pump from 1842.
