Traditions and art of our ancestors

Traditions and art of our ancestors

Traditions are literally the treasure of every nation. Many of them have only been preserved in museums, while others live on. Take a trip and learn more about the best traditions in the Olomouc Region – be they folk customs, traditional trades, or gastronomy.

The biggest axe and the funeral carriage

Konice Chateau

The Museum of Local Handicrafts presents various trades with long traditions, such as grain milling, manufacture of scales, blacksmithing, brewing, and dressmaking. A number of rare exhibits are on display at the museum, for instance the oldest preserved tower clockwork in the region and firearms from the Napoleonic Wars.

The museum also boasts the largest collection of axes of all kinds in the Czech Republic, recorded in the Czech Book of Records. The collection includes the largest Czech axe and lumberjack saw.

Čechy pod Kosířem Chateau

This picturesque Neo-Classicist chateau surrounded by a vast English-style park is associated with the noble Silva-Tarouca family and with influential Czech painter Josef Mánes, a frequent guest at the chateau. There are five guided tours available.

Every July, the park hosts Josefkol, an international event presenting ancient trades associated with coach-making. The event is organised by the Museum of Carriages located just outside the park. It showcases the largest collection of historical carriages and lanterns in Central Europe, with more than 100 coaches and sleighs. The rarest exhibits are the Golden Coach from 1750 and the Archbishop’s Coach. The collection also includes funeral coaches, including the largest one in the world.

A still living craft tradition

Helfštýn Castle

Probably founded in the last quarter of the 13th century, the main redevelopment into a Gothic fortress took place at the turn of the 14–15th centuries. The castle recently underwent a unique redevelopment that opened up the previously inaccessible upper storeys of the palace, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape of the Moravian Gate Valley.

Helfštýn is the site of the annual meeting of artistic blacksmiths, Hefaiston, during which you can watch master blacksmiths at work. Their artworks permanently adorn not only the castle itself, but also the nearby town of Lipník nad Bečvou.

Velké Losiny Chateau

The chateau was built in the last quarter of the 16th century by John the Younger of Žerotín, who was also instrumental in the development of the local spa and founded the handmade paper mill, still in operation. The Losiny domain was spared the events of the Thirty Years’ War, due to which the chateau has been preserved in its original form including portions of the furnishings.

Handmade Paper Mill and Museum of Paper – Europe’s oldest paper manufactory still in operation. The visit includes the tour of the Museum of Paper with an exhibit of traditional products, technologies, and equipment, and the tour of the paper mill where you can watch how paper is made.

Velké Losiny Spa – founded in 1592, the spa is sought-after especially due to the therapeutic effects of the warmest springs in Moravia.
